A vacuum in the educational sector was felt and thus Shrimanta Shankar Academy, a registered service organization was set up in 1992 at Panbazar, Ghy. Considering the long-felt need of an institution imparting quality education with an eye on the character and career building of the young generation in this region of the country, this institution has been established by a registered society named Shrimanta Shankar Academy. Thus, the motto of Shrimanta Shankar Academy is “Career with character”, and the watch word of the institution is Truth, Discipline and Excellence.
In 1992, an English medium Private institution of +2 category was formed and financed by Girijananda Choudhury’s family of Ghy and named after the great spiritual leader and social reformer of the Assamese society Srimanta Sankar Dev as Shrimanta Shankar Academy.
This is infact the 1st Junior College in the N.E part of the Country. It was a bold and pioneering step in the history of Assam to set up a Jr. College to impart quality education with a difference. The untiring effort of Choudhury family and able guidance of Dr. K. D. Krori, Retd. Principal, Cotton College and Prof. R. Haq, Dr. R. P.M Bordoloi and Prof S.C. Deb, all retired professors of Cotton College, along with some young but dedicated teachers, the academy within a short span acquired an honourable niche. Our sincere thanks to A.H.S.E.C for recognizing the institution and permitting us its own centre from the very first batch.
The first batch consisting of Science stream appeared in 1994 and emerged with flying colours and the 10th rank was secured by our student Bhaskar Dutta is H. S. Final examination.
The Arts stream was introduced in 1994 under the able guidance of Dr. Saruja Das, Retd Principal of Handique Girls’ College and a team of young dedicated teachers. Outstanding results of the Arts stream and in the first year itself Prachee Dewri secured the 7th rank. In 2011 the Commerce stream came up and by securing the 1st rank Arihant Maloo in the first yr. itself it scripted history.Years after years time rolled on and results of Shrimanta Shankar Academy also went on higher and higher, with each year the number of rank holders from the institution kept on increasing, adhering to the old traditional values like discipline, Punctuality honesty, truthfulness etc and this has only been possible by the relentless efforts of the teaching staff, office staff & the management.
A new academic building was constructed which provides all the modern amenities. In the year 2019, B.Com under Gauhati University was started.
